American Dream Mall in 2026: New Stores, Attractions & What's Changed

Last Updated: April 9th, 2026

The American Dream Mall in East Rutherford keeps evolving — and 2026 has brought a fresh wave of store openings, updated attractions, and some real improvements to the overall experience. We’ve put together the most current guide to what’s new, what’s worth your time, and what to skip on your next visit.

New Store Openings at American Dream in 2026

American Dream’s retail lineup has continued to fill out in 2026, with several notable additions across fashion, beauty, and dining. The mall now has well over 450 stores and experiences, making it one of the largest retail and entertainment destinations in the United States.

Key additions to watch for this year include expanded luxury offerings on the upper levels and new fast-fashion and athleisure brands targeting younger shoppers. The dining mix has also grown — American Dream has made a concerted effort to replace food court staples with sit-down concepts and regional restaurant brands that give the mall a more distinctive food identity.

Pro tip: The American Dream website and app update their store directory regularly. Before you visit, it’s worth checking the current directory to confirm that the specific store you’re targeting is open — some retailers operate on different hours than the mall itself.

Attractions Update: What’s Open in 2026

Nickelodeon Universe Theme Park

Nickelodeon Universe remains the anchor attraction at American Dream, and it’s genuinely impressive in scale — 8 acres of indoor rides and experiences including a full roller coaster. In 2026, the park has continued to refresh its character meet-and-greet lineup and seasonal programming. However, this is the attraction that drives the biggest crowds, particularly on weekends and school holidays. If rides are on the agenda, book timed-entry tickets online in advance — walk-up availability on busy days is limited.

DreamWorks Water Park

The indoor water park is open year-round, which makes it a genuinely unique option for families in the colder months. Additionally, it’s a smart choice if the weather outside is unpredictable — you’re getting a full water park experience regardless of what’s happening in the parking lot. Tickets for the DreamWorks Water Park must be purchased in advance; same-day availability is not guaranteed on weekends.

Big SNOW Indoor Ski Slope

Big SNOW remains one of the most genuinely unusual things you can do in New Jersey — an actual indoor ski and snowboard slope, open every day of the year. Beginners can take lessons; more experienced skiers can free-ski. It’s not a replacement for a weekend in Vermont, but as a half-day activity paired with shopping, it works really well. Equipment rental is included in the ticket price.

The Rink at American Dream

The NHL-regulation ice rink is open for public skating sessions year-round. It’s a solid, affordable option — especially for families — and notably less crowded than the other headline attractions. Check the American Dream website for public session times, as the rink also hosts hockey leagues and skating lessons.

Shopping at American Dream: Honest Assessment

American Dream’s retail section has matured significantly since its rocky opening years. The mix now covers most of what a typical NJ shopper needs: fast fashion (Zara, H&M, Uniqlo), mid-range (Nordstrom Rack, Primark), beauty (Sephora, MAC), and a growing luxury wing. It’s not Short Hills — don’t come expecting a predominantly luxury experience — but for a one-stop trip combining shopping and entertainment, it genuinely delivers.

Where American Dream still lags slightly is depth within categories. A dedicated sneakerhead, for example, will find more variety at Freehold Raceway Mall or Garden State Plaza. However, if you want the broadest possible range under one roof with the option of adding rides, skating, or skiing to the day, American Dream is the obvious choice.

Tax Savings at American Dream

American Dream is located in New Jersey, which means you benefit from NJ’s year-round tax exemption on clothing and footwear items under $110 per item. On a practical level: a $90 pair of sneakers, a blouse, or a child’s jacket costs nothing in sales tax. For items over $110, the standard NJ rate of 6.625% applies.

This is a meaningful advantage for international visitors and shoppers coming from New York — see our international visitors guide to NJ outlet shopping for a full breakdown of tax-free savings and VAT refund tips.

Parking & Getting There in 2026

Parking

American Dream has a large parking structure with thousands of spaces. Parking is free for the first few hours and then charged at a modest flat rate for longer visits — check current rates on the American Dream website as these have been updated. The garage fills fastest near the Nickelodeon Universe entrance; arriving 15 minutes before mall opening on busy days gets you a much better spot.

By Bus from NYC

NJ Transit Route 351 runs directly from the Port Authority Bus Terminal in Manhattan to American Dream — no transfers needed. The journey takes around 30–40 minutes depending on traffic. It’s one of the most convenient bus connections to any NJ mall from New York City. For full route details and schedules, see our NJ Transit bus guide to NJ malls.

Additionally, private shuttle and group tour options are available for larger parties — details in our NJ mall transport alternatives guide.

Best Days & Times to Visit

  • Quietest: Tuesday–Thursday, 11am–3pm. Significantly less crowded than weekends.
  • Avoid: Saturday afternoons and any school holiday period — the combination of retail and attractions pulls very large crowds.
  • FIFA World Cup 2026 note: American Dream is located minutes from MetLife Stadium, one of the primary World Cup venues. Match days this summer will create unusually high foot traffic in the area — plan accordingly or avoid mall visits on game days.
