Black Friday at New Jersey malls and outlets is one of the best shopping opportunities in the entire Northeast — and it’s not even close. Stack NJ’s zero sales tax on clothing on top of Black Friday discounts, and you’re looking at effective savings that beat almost any other state. We’ve been tracking NJ mall deals for years, and the formula hasn’t changed: right mall, right timing, right strategy. This guide covers all three for Black Friday 2026.
Why New Jersey Is the Best State for Black Friday Shopping
Most shoppers don’t realize it, but New Jersey has a structural advantage on Black Friday that no discount can replicate elsewhere. Clothing and footwear are completely tax-free statewide — no exceptions. That means on a $200 coat marked down 30% for Black Friday, you’re already ahead of a New York or Pennsylvania shopper paying 4–8% tax on top of the same price. Additionally, NJ is home to some of the densest mall and outlet concentration on the East Coast, so you rarely need to drive more than 20 minutes between destinations.
Pro tip: if you’re shopping in Jersey City (Newport Centre) or Elizabeth (Jersey Gardens), those locations sit in Urban Enterprise Zones where most non-clothing items are also taxed at roughly half the standard NJ rate. Bring a photo ID to claim it at checkout.
Outlet vs. Mall on Black Friday: Where Should You Go?
This is the question we get every year. The honest answer: it depends on what you’re buying. Here’s how we break it down.
Premium outlet centers (Jersey Gardens, Jackson Premium Outlets, Jersey Shore Premium Outlets, Gloucester Premium Outlets, Woodbury Commons) offer factory-direct pricing year-round — typically 25–65% off retail. On Black Friday, outlets layer an additional 10–40% on top of already-discounted prices. However, outlet merchandise is often last season or slightly irregular. If brand-new current-season product matters to you, a traditional mall is the better call.
Traditional malls (American Dream, Short Hills, Garden State Plaza, Cherry Hill, Freehold, Bridgewater) carry current-season inventory at full retail, then apply Black Friday markdowns. The discounts can be significant — 20–50% on fashion, tech accessories, and home goods — and you’re getting the latest styles. For luxury shoppers, Short Hills and The Avenue at American Dream offer deals you simply won’t find at an outlet.
We’ve found the best strategy is to combine both: hit an outlet center in the morning when energy is high and crowds are manageable, then move to a traditional mall in the early afternoon for current-season finds. See our North Jersey mall route guide for specific multi-stop itineraries.
Best NJ Malls & Outlets for Black Friday 2026
Not all NJ malls are equal on Black Friday. Here’s where to go based on what you’re after.
Best for luxury deals — The Mall at Short Hills: Bloomingdale’s, Nordstrom, and Saks Fifth Avenue all run significant Black Friday events. It’s the only place in NJ where you’ll find Chanel, Louis Vuitton, and Hermès under one roof — and while luxury brands don’t discount deeply, department store Black Friday sales here are genuinely strong.
Best for outlet deals — The Mills at Jersey Gardens: 200+ outlet stores, zero clothing tax, and one of the easiest mall access points in NJ (5 minutes from Newark Airport, PATH-accessible from NYC). Black Friday lines form early at Nike, Coach, and Michael Kors. Arrive before 8 AM if you’re targeting those stores specifically.
Best for families — American Dream Mall: 450+ stores plus Nickelodeon Universe, DreamWorks Water Park, and Big SNOW ski slope. Black Friday here is an all-day event. The entertainment options mean the kids stay occupied while you shop — and the store count means you can cover a huge range in one trip. See our American Dream family guide for visit planning tips.
Best for designer outlet savings — Woodbury Common Premium Outlets: Just over the border in Central Valley, NY, Woodbury has the deepest designer outlet roster in the region — Gucci, Prada, Burberry, and 250+ more. Black Friday here is extremely busy. We strongly recommend arriving at opening (typically 6–7 AM) and having a short list ready. Parking lots fill by 9 AM.
Best for everyday brands — Freehold Raceway Mall or Bridgewater Commons: Both have 170–200+ stores with strong mid-market anchors (Nordstrom, Macy’s, Bloomingdale’s) and reliable Black Friday events. Additionally, both tend to have calmer crowds than the mega-malls, making them great for a focused, stress-free haul.
The Bergen County Warning: Know Before You Go
This catches people every year. Garden State Plaza and Paramus Park Mall are closed on Thanksgiving Day due to Bergen County blue laws — and in 2026, Thanksgiving falls on Thursday, November 26. Both malls open normally on Black Friday (Friday, November 27) and stay open through the full holiday weekend.
However, if Black Friday falls on a Sunday in future years, Bergen County malls would be closed that day too. It’s worth checking our NJ Sunday shopping guide before any weekend trip to Bergen County. All other NJ malls and outlets are open on Thanksgiving and Black Friday — though hours vary. See the full NJ mall holiday hours guide for updated schedules per mall.
How to Stack Black Friday Savings in NJ
This is where NJ shoppers have a real edge. Here’s the full savings stack, in order of impact.
- Zero clothing tax: Automatic on every clothing and footwear purchase statewide. No action required.
- Black Friday store discounts: Typically 20–50% off at traditional retailers, 10–40% additional at outlets on top of year-round pricing.
- Mall coupon booklets: Most NJ malls release a Black Friday coupon booklet — either at guest services or through their app. Simon malls (GSP, Freehold, Jersey Gardens, Short Hills) have a dedicated Simon app with exclusive offers. Pick it up before you start shopping.
- Credit card rewards: Stack a cash-back or rewards card on top of everything above. Cards with 5% back at department stores on Q4 purchases (common with rotating category cards) add meaningful value on large purchases.
- VIP outlet programs: Jersey Shore Premium Outlets and Jackson Premium Outlets both have Simon VIP Club — free to join, with an additional coupon book and partner discounts on Black Friday. Gloucester Premium Outlets has a similar program. Sign up before you arrive.
- UEZ tax advantage: Jersey Gardens (Elizabeth) and Newport Centre (Jersey City) locations mean half-rate sales tax on non-clothing items too. Worth knowing if you’re buying electronics, kitchen goods, or accessories.
Black Friday 2026 Timing Strategy
Timing on Black Friday matters more than most people realize. Here’s what we’ve learned from covering NJ malls year after year.
6–8 AM: Best time for outlet centers. Lines at Nike, Coach, Michael Kors, and Levi’s form before opening at the premium outlets. If you’re targeting specific high-demand brands, this is your window. Crowds are manageable, staff are fresh, and stock is complete.
10 AM–12 PM: Peak hour for traditional malls. Department stores are running full-floor events, food courts are open and staffed, and the energy is high. However, parking at American Dream, GSP (on Saturday), and Woodbury Commons gets difficult. Consider arriving by transit — see our NJ Transit bus guide to malls for routes to every major destination, or look into shopping tours and private transport options.
2–5 PM: Often the sweet spot at outlets. The early-morning rush has cleared, most stores have restocked, and you can actually browse. Deals don’t expire — the discounts run through the full weekend.
Evening (6 PM+): Good time for entertainment-first malls like American Dream or Palisades Center. The shopping rush has eased, restaurants are excellent, and B&B Theatres (opening at American Dream in 2026) makes for a great end to the day.
