Newark Liberty Airport might be the most underrated airport for layover shopping in the US. Jersey Gardens — one of NJ’s largest outlet malls — is literally 5 minutes away by shuttle. Here’s exactly how to use a layover at EWR for a genuine shopping run, with timing guides for 2-hour through 8-hour stops.
The Shuttle: How It Works
The shuttle picks up outside Terminal B, upper level (near Chili’s Too). Here’s the current schedule:
- Monday–Saturday: departures roughly every 30 minutes, 10:15am–8:45pm
- Sunday: 11:15am–6:45pm
The ride to the mall takes about 10 minutes. Pick up your return shuttle from outside the mall’s main entrance, same schedule. Cost: $9 round trip. Always confirm the current schedule at the Jersey Gardens information desk when you arrive, as times can vary seasonally.
Important: Budget at least 30 minutes of buffer before your return to the airport — return through security can take time, especially at peak hours. We personally always give at least 90 minutes before departure.
How Long Do You Need? Layover Guide by Duration
2–3 Hour Layover
This is tight but doable if you’re decisive. Realistically: shuttle there (10 min), shop 60–75 min, shuttle back (10 min), walk to gate (15–20 min). You’ll have time for 3–5 stores if you go in with a specific list. Best bet: Tommy Hilfiger, Coach, Nike — all near the main entrance. Don’t try to see the whole mall. Focus.
4–5 Hour Layover
This is the sweet spot. 2.5–3 hours of actual shopping time, comfortable buffer for return. You can genuinely explore the mall, grab something to eat, and hit 8–12 stores. This is how we did our first layover visit and it felt completely relaxed.
6–8+ Hour Layover
Now you have real flexibility. Jersey Gardens in the morning, then consider a rideshare ($15–20) to American Dream Mall — 15 min away — for the afternoon. Or take NJ Transit into Jersey City for the Hoboken waterfront plus Newport Centre Mall combo. Both are easily reachable and give you a fuller experience of New Jersey beyond the airport corridor.
What You’ll Find at Jersey Gardens
The Mills at Jersey Gardens is NJ’s largest indoor outlet mall — 200+ stores all under one roof. It’s fully climate-controlled (essential if you’re connecting through in summer heat or winter cold), with everything from fast fashion to premium brands. The highlights:
- Tommy Hilfiger: The largest Tommy outlet in the entire country. If you like the brand, this is the place.
- Coach, Kate Spade, Michael Kors: All here, all at outlet prices (30–50% off regular retail).
- Nike, Adidas, Under Armour: Good selection for athletic wear, especially if you’re looking for specific styles.
- Calvin Klein, Polo Ralph Lauren, Nautica: Classic American brands at genuine outlet prices.
First stop, always: The information desk near the main entrance. Ask for the coupon booklet — it’s $5, but if you show an international passport, it’s free. The booklet has 20–30% discount vouchers for multiple stores and is legitimately worth getting.
The Tax-Free Bonus
New Jersey charges zero sales tax on clothing and shoes. Everything you buy at Jersey Gardens — every shirt, every pair of sneakers, every jacket — is tax-free. This is meaningful for any traveler, but especially for international visitors who are used to paying 10–25% consumption tax at home. The price on the tag is the price you pay.

Practical Tips for the Airport Shopper
- Travel with a foldable tote bag — you’ll buy things and won’t want to juggle multiple paper bags through TSA.
- Leave your checked bags at baggage storage if you can — EWR has storage options, or check with your airline about storage at the gate area. Shopping is much easier without heavy luggage.
- Avoid the food court between 12–2pm — it gets genuinely packed. Eat early or after the rush.
- Keep your passport with you (you likely will anyway from the flight) — it’s your ticket to the free coupon book.
- TSA tip: If you buy more than you can fit in your carry-on, most stores will help you consolidate bags. You can also ship purchases via FedEx from the mall if you’re heading home and don’t want to check a bag.
